The Order of the Knights Templar was founded in Jerusalem in 1119, after the First Crusade and the creation of the Latin Kingdoms of the East, to protect pilgrims in the Holy Land. Simultaneously monks and warriors, their white mantles emblazoned with a red cross after 1147, the Templars set up their commanderies in the West, fought in the Iberian peninsula, and formed a military order to defend the Christian East. But the fall of the Latin kingdoms in 1291 dealt them a fatal blow. For Philippe le Bel, they had simply become an order than was too rich and too proud. Its last masters were burnt at the stake in 1314.
