For having tried, like “good Christians”, to explain that Evil could not possibly have sprung from a divine source, the Cathars, during the 13th century, were to fall victim to a succession of violent acts, each perpetrated in the name of their own God, as the Albigensian Crusade blazed its bloody trail through Languedoc. Preferring to ignore the distinction between Cathar heresy and Occitan culture, monarch and pope alike hurried to lay hold of these sun-drenched lands where, today, the half-forgotten secrets of so many faithful souls lie buried among the ruins of once proud castle walls.
